Emily
was born on October 4, 2000, full term, weighing 7lbs 11oz at North
Shore University Hospital - Manhasset. While in active labor and preparing
for delivery, Beth suffered a massive (40% - 50%) placental abruption
- or premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall. As
time was critical for survival and well-being, an emergency vaginal
delivery was performed.
Due
to both the deprivation of oxygen and loss of blood caused by the
abruption, Emily was unresponsive after birth. She was intubated immediately
and taken to the Neonatal ICU. Her breathing was assisted by a respirator
and she received rapid intravenous (into her veins) infusion of fluids
without requiring a blood transfusion. She was taken off the respirator
and all feedings were done within 2 3 days after birth.
She
responded extremely well to the treatment and was able to come home
in 7 days. Fortunately, there were no lasting effects from the ordeal
and she is now a happy and healthy child.
